ATV Insurance for the Ride of Your Life

Your ATV probably represents fun and recreation to you.  Insuring the vehicle may be the last thing on your mind.  You're wearing a helmet when you ride, usually on land you are familiar with, so why bother with insurance.  All-terrain vehicles are fun to drive, and they can be handy for hunting, farming, and any number of other activities or work situations.  But they are also motorized vehicles that can be somewhat unpredictable.  That is why it's always smart to insure your ride.

There are three basic steps when considering ATV or 4-wheeler insurance:

Classify the vehicle:  How many wheels does it have?  Is it for off-road or can you ride it on roads?  Is your ATV made for passengers?  Perhaps you plan to use it purely for recreation or rather as a work vehicle on your farm or ranch.  You will likely ask these questions when buying the vehicle, but you'll have to know the answers when purchasing insurance.

Know the state laws:  Many states require ATV insurance if the vehicle will be used on public or private property the driver doesn't own.  Some states require insurance for vehicles operated on state-owned land.

Contact your insurance agent:  Consult us to help you determine the ATV insurance that's right for you, based on many factors including how you will use the vehicle and who will be driving it, among other things.

As with other vehicles, there are four basic types of coverage you and add to your ATV or 4-wheeler insurance, depending on how much risk you want to assume and how much protection you want from the insurance company.  You will be responsible for the deductible, and your insurance will pay the rest, up to its limit.

1.  Bodily injury and property damage liability covers injuries to people or property caused by your ATV (when you are at fault).  This coverage is important because it helps protect you in the event of a lawsuit since it protects your assets up to the policy limit.

2.  Collision coverage will pay when significant damage occurs in a crash with another ATV or vehicle, rocks or logs on a trail, fences and other debris.  Normal wear and tear associated with off-road riding, such as dents and non-structural damage would not be covered.

3.  Comprehensive coverage protects you if your ATV is damaged by something other than a collision (such as fire, theft, vandalism, hail, animals or flying objects).

4.  Uninsured/underinsured motorist protects you from ATV owners who don't have enough insurance or any at all.  Considering the varying state requirements, it's smart to protect yourself from these situations.  It will cover medical bills and lost wages.

After you have taken proper precautions with ATV insurance, all that's left if enjoying the ride.  These vehicles provide fun for your family and a helpful function for hunting, fishing and all sorts of work.  But you owe it to yourself and your family to be prepared for unforeseen bumps in the trails.
